up bright and early, we were off for the most exciting part of our itinerary - ROME!!! chris and i had been waiting SO LONG to go to rome (we saved it!) and we were really excited the time had finally come!
we had an amazing hotel that was, literally, a 10 minute walk to the colosseum, which was EPIC! you see all these pictures and hear about it, but it can't really prepare you for the sheer amazingness of this building. it's huge and so old you almost feel bad walking around it. there was a lot of information to read about on the walls and really cool depictions of what life was life back when they used this arena. all the gladiators and animal fights, martyrs that died there, all of it...very interesting. and so foreign to canada...you just don't get this kind of history back home. despite the LONG lineup, what a way to start our tour of rome!

after the colosseum, we were off wandering to find the trevi fountain. and when we found it - GORGEOUS! how they made these things back in the day is beyond me...the precision and detail (and longevity) of it all. incredible! we even through some change in for good luck - they say that almost 3000 EURO gets thrown into the fountain every day!
with the spanish steps in mind, we wandered off to explore even more of the city. along the way - STREET BEERS (and candy)!! a nice cold beer on a nice hot day in the most beautiful city...can't complain!
we found the spanish steps and hiked it all the way up to the top. lots of people hanging around just drinking beers, chatting with friends. and what a view from the top!
walking around some more, we found beautiful piazzas (with the "puking lions"), pretty cars, more amazing architecture, gorgeous churches, lush and knockoff street shopping. all in all - success :)
we needed a snack, so we went to christine's favourite - mcdonald's! and guys, we proved the myth! you CAN get beer at mcdonald's! WOOOOT!
night-time walking was so much fun. by then, most of us were drunk and just wandering the streets. we finally made it to campo fiori to have some dinner and then wandered the long way home. it was a beautiful night, with great company.
yay to day 1 in rome!
